International Dockworkers Council (IDC) Letter of Support Letter

Dear Brother Butler,

I am writing to you on behalf of the International Dockworkers Council (IDC), which as you are no doubt aware, was formed in 2000 as a result of the bitter lesson learned by port workers around the world after the sacking of the 500 Liverpool Dockers back in 1995.

IDC’s European Zone met in Piraeus, Greece last week, primarily to discuss a plan of action to deal with the very serious situation that exists for the workers at the COSCO terminal in that port. During this meeting, we also discussed the alarming reports we have received recently on the decision by Del Monte to shift their cargo-handling operations from your port to a cut price outfit owned by the notorious Holt family where workers are lower paid and do not receive the necessary social benefits.

Having discussed these reports, our Affiliates found it imperative that we offer you our unconditional support and do whatever we can to ensure that these unscrupulous employers do not succeed.

Please do not hesitate in contacting our office in Barcelona or our European Zone Coordinator for any immediate assistance we can give and we would appreciate any information from you that could help us to plan support actions.

Yours in solidarity,

Antolin Goya
IDC General Coordinator
